History

1963

Our story began in 1963 when the founder of our Group, Tan Sri Yaw Teck Seng embarked on his logging business in Sarawak, Malaysia.

1976-1990

From very humble beginnings, the business started growing when the Group was awarded a concession by the Sarawak state government to expand operations and Syarikat Samling Timber Sdn Bhd or SST was born. Steady business was our hallmark for almost 20 years before the Group started spreading its wings with forays into both upstream and downstream activities.

1991-1995

We established three plywood mills in joint ventures with Japanese and Korean firms. At the same time, we expanded our value-added processing capabilities to include fibreboard, flooring, furniture and components, door facing and door production.

1996

Samling’s upstream and downstream companies have obtained various certifications from acclaimed certification bodies such as SIRIM QAS International Sdn Bhd, SCS Global Services, Control Union, etc.   Certificates achieved are Forest Management Certificates for Natural Forests and Forest Plantations), certificates for Chain of Custody, ISO Quality Management Assurance certificates, Certificate of Conformity, Carb & EPA certificates and JAS/JIS certificates.

1998

This proved to be a breakthrough year for the Group as SST became a partner in the Sarawak state government’s development and establishment of tree plantations in Sarawak. With the aim of doing a job properly, SST partnered with GTZ – the German Agency for Technical Cooperation – and in collaboration with the Sarawak Forest Department, embarked on a pioneer project which led to the identification of the Sela’an-Linau Forest Management Unit.

2000s

In the early 2000s, as our products started establishing a reputation in the market, we formed partnerships with the American firm Masonite International Corporation (production and marketing of door facings and doors) and Japanese firms Daiken Corporation and Itochu Corporation (production of fibreboards).

As demand continued to grow for our products, we expanded into kitchen and wardrobe furnishing with the opening of AinoFurnishing (formerly known as AinoKitchen) retail outlets throughout Malaysia.

2000-2008

Over the course of eight years, SST established five tree planting nurseries – in Segan, Paong, Layun, Lana and Marudi – for the production of tree seedlings.

2009

These efforts came to fruition with the harvesting of plantation logs in Segan. These logs were used for the production of MDF door skin by Magna Foremost.

2017

The excellence of our products was reflected in the awarding of the GOLD AWARD at the Sarawak Chief Minister Industrial Excellence Award to Samling Housing Products Sdn Bhd.

2019

Our latest venture has been in the production of kitchen cabinets with the establishment of Prominet Target Sdn Bhd. Also in 2019, our subsidiary TreeOne Mega Pellet began construction of a biomass pellet facility in Bintulu, Sarawak

2021

We began the production of engineered flooring in Miri, Sarawak.
